“Hey what’s up with Freewheel? What’s up with comics? What the hell?”

This is just an update to let you, the internet, know what’s going on with me, the cartoonist. Let’s start by saying I haven’t drawn anything substantial in over six months so I don’t really consider myself an “active cartoonist” at this point. Not saying I won’t draw anything again, but it’s not even close to being at the top of my list of priorities at the moment.

So this is what happened, and I’ll just be real here: my husband and I, who were together for nine years, split up towards the end of 2011 and I’ve kind of had to rebuild my life from scratch since then. This includes working at my job as a dog walker as much as humanly possible and returning to school to pursue a second bachelor’s degree in biology, with an interest specifically in conservation science. This takes up all my time, as you can imagine, so comics aren’t really on the forefront of my mind these days. It’s just a fact that without the financial support of my partner, I can’t make comics a full-time thing. Barely even a part-time thing, if I can make it a thing at all (which I can’t really right now). So I decided to start pursuing a new career in science.

This doesn’t mean I won’t draw comics again, but I have to look out for my own future financial security, and this seemed like my best bet, since science has always been an interest of mine. I also don’t have access to any of my books (they are in storage) so I can’t sell anyone anything either.

For those of you still waiting on Kickstarter rewards, don’t worry, I don’t plan on just taking your money and running. When I get my tax refund and some other money I am waiting on, I will send out messages to anyone who is owed anything other than a book (which you should’ve already received) to facilitate some type of partial refund for the rewards you never received. However, I do have to have the money to refund you in order to do that (obviously I used the money I got to pay for the printing of the book) so it has to wait until that money exists in my bank account. Sorry about that.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at liz@lizbaillie.com, but I will warn you that I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment and don’t always get around to answering right away.

Ouch. 9 years is a good while, what happened? Is this a "yep it's over thing", a "something's been brewing for awhile" thing, a "someone went batshit insane" thing?

I'm sorry to hear it, and sorry that freewheel will be on hiatus. But if possible do a little drawing every once in a while to keep the nibs on the pens from going dry, ok?

Liz, I am sorry that you had such a rough year, and I hope 2012 is better. You certainly don't need to refund me anything; you've given a lot to the world and I am glad to know you, which is reward enough. Please take care of yourself & I do hope to see you soon. -S.
